Home Pet Proofing
Reading Time:
Getting a pet is very exciting, but it also comes with a lot of responsibilities. The most important one is to make sure that your fluffy friend is safe and healthy. Many people realize that they have to pet-proof their home the hard way. Putting away your belongings will not only lower the chance of potential damages but also prevent your pet from chewing on something that can hurt them. Here are things to look out for in different rooms of your home.
Kitchen
The kitchen is where people keep their food and drinks and often leave them on the counter. Although these are safe for people to consume, some products are dangerous for your pet’s health. Make sure that all foods and liquids are in plastic or glass containers that your pet cannot open. The most dangerous spot in the kitchen is usually the cabinet under the sink with cleaning supplies. You can pet-proof your cabinets by installing baby-proof locks. Another thing to pay attention to is your trash cans and avoid leaving them open.
Bathrooms
You might keep some of your medication or cleaning supplies in your bathroom cabinets or closet. You can secure them by using the baby-proof locks on the cabinet doors. If you do not have cabinets your next option is to get plastic bins with lids. Leaving medications around can be deadly to your pet if they consume them. A study has shown that there are more than 232,000 cases of pet poisoning a year. Little items like bobby pins and hair ties can result in surgical procedures if swallowed or cause severe injuries. Be mindful of what you leave on the counters.
Bedrooms
Pets like to chew on almost anything. Electric cords are one of the many things they like to nibble on. You can try to hide them under furniture, rugs, or even run them through the wall. However, if you can’t hide them anywhere, you could use a hose to cover the cord. It is an inexpensive way to protect your pet from getting electrocuted.
There are many things to think about when having a pet. There will be a lot of trial and error when it comes to pet-proofing your home. However, the best thing you can do is to keep your place clean and tidy to reduce the chance of your pet getting ahold of something dangerous for their health.
