Safety Tips When Traveling

Reading Time:

If you are ready to get out of town, here are some tips to help you have a safe trip.

Plan Ahead
If you're traveling by car, check your route for possible highway delays due to construction or closings. It also helps if you know what the weather will be like.

Pay Attention
It's important to stay aware and keep security and safety in mind. Here are a few tips:

  • Keep track of your suitcases and other belongings.
  • Review the emergency evacuation route from your hotel room.
  • Discuss safety issues with your family or traveling companions, including what you'll do if you get separated.

Stay Connected
Everyone should have appropriate emergency phone numbers in case of an emergency, whether you are traveling or not. You can easily set these up in your cell phone contact list. For example, "ICE-Jane S." could be the phone number for a sibling who can act as an emergency contact person in case of an accident or other emergency. Responders know to look for these contacts on your phone. Finally, you can prepare your emergency numbers, but it will all be for nothing if you don't pack your cell phone charger, so don’t forget that.

Finally, don’t let common sense go on vacation just because you are on vacation. Things you do to stay safe at home should be the same for when you are traveling, so lock doors and windows, and be aware of your surroundings.
